Kimi K3 open-weight model emerges as alternative to US AI

The open-weight AI model Kimi K3, released by Moonshot AI, is emerging as a significant alternative to major US-based AI models. With 2.8 trillion parameters, it is currently the largest freely available open-weight model in the world.

In practical testing conducted by agorum® within its ALBERT | AI platform, Kimi K3 demonstrated strong performance in real-world coding tasks and agentic processes. The model features a one-million-token context window and vision capabilities. According to Artificial Analysis, Kimi K3 achieved an Intelligence Index of 57, placing it on par with models like Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5. On the AA-Briefcase agentic benchmark, it secured the second-highest Elo score of 1543, trailing only Claude Fable 5.

For European medium-sized enterprises, the availability of high-performing open-weight models offers a potential solution to the dilemma of AI dependency. By utilizing models that can be operated on private infrastructure or through European providers, companies may gain greater control over pricing, availability, and data protection compared to relying solely on US-based flagship models.
