Kimi Onoda reappointed as Economic Security Minister
Kimi Onoda has been reappointed as the Minister for Economic Security in the second Takaichi Cabinet, which was established on September 17, 2026. In addition to her existing role in promoting an orderly society for coexistence with foreigners, she has been assigned new responsibilities for infectious disease crisis management.
Her portfolio has seen a reduction in scope; she no longer oversees intellectual property strategy, science and technology policy, space policy, AI strategy, or the Cool Japan strategy. These responsibilities have been transferred to Digital Minister Shunji Furukawa.
Onoda’s public appearance has drawn significant media and social media attention due to a shift in her presentation. Moving away from her previous style of wearing bright dresses, she appeared in a formal black morning suit during the cabinet's official photo session. This change in attire, noted by observers for its striking appearance, coincided with a change in her positioning in official ministerial photographs.
Separately, Onoda faces scrutiny regarding allegations of violating the Public Offices Election Act during the 2022 House of Councillors election. Reports suggest an unauthorized second election office was opened in Setouchi City. While Onoda stated the office was used for political rather than electoral activities and pledged to correct financial reports, conflicting evidence regarding rent receipts has been reported.
