Kimon frigate makes first visit to NATO base in Sudan

The Hellenic Navy's new ultra-modern frigate, Kimon, has completed its first visit to the NATO base in Maratha, Sudan. The arrival was marked by a ceremonial water salute from tugboats and escort vessels.

As the first of the FDI HN (Belharra) type digital frigates received by Greece, the Kimon represents a significant shift in the Navy's operational doctrine. The 122-meter vessel, with a displacement exceeding 4,500 tons, features high levels of automation allowing for a crew of 110 to 130 personnel.

Key technological advancements include the Sea Fire radar for simultaneous air and surface surveillance and the Aster 30 missile system, which provides area air defense capabilities for the first time in a Greek frigate. The ship is also equipped with Exocet MM40 Block 3C missiles, CAPTAS-4 anti-submarine sonar, MU90 torpedoes, and a RAM close-in weapon system. The vessel is capable of carrying two helicopters.
