KIMS Bhubaneswar extracts LED bulb from toddler’s lung with hybrid bronchoscopy

Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bhubaneswar successfully removed a small metallic LED bulb that a four‑year‑old girl had inhaled. After eight days of persistent cough and failed attempts using standard scopes at another hospital, a CT scan showed the bulb lodged deep in a narrow branch of the lower right lung. ENT surgeons Dr Pradipt Ranjan Sahoo and Dr Manisha Mallick performed a combined rigid and flexible bronchoscopy – a hybrid approach – to extract the object without open surgery. The child resumed eating within hours and was discharged in stable health. Founder Achyuta Samanta praised the team for completing the rare, complex procedure.
