Kinchil Mayor Irvin Pisté Canul detained by federal authorities

Irvin de la Cruz Pisté Canul, the mayor of Kinchil, Yucatán, was detained by federal agents from the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) on Monday. The operation took place at the Kinchil Municipal Palace and was confirmed by the National Registry of Detentions, which noted his transfer to the Federal Criminal Justice Center in Mérida.

The arrest is reportedly linked to a federal judicial order stemming from his first term as mayor (2015–2018). Investigations involve alleged irregularities in the management of public resources and the unbid assignment of works, specifically related to a housing roof construction program. While some reports suggested the detention was due to a failure to appear at a hearing, others noted that a previous legal injunction (amparo) protecting him had expired in July.

Pisté Canul has since been released and has resumed his duties. In a public statement, he claimed he was informed of the legal requirement to appear at the last moment and that he attended the proceeding voluntarily to exercise his rights. He denied being held under arrest and stated that the legal process is proceeding normally.
