Kinder Morgan Mississippi Gas Pipeline Awaits FERC Approval

Kinder Morgan’s Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. and Southern Natural Gas Co. have applied to build a 206‑mile natural‑gas pipeline that would cross ten counties in Mississippi and connect to existing lines in Alabama. The project, valued at $1.7 billion, would add up to 1.5 billion cubic feet per day of transport capacity, create roughly 750 temporary jobs and 15 permanent positions, and include new compressor stations in Humphreys, Attala and Lauderdale counties.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is expected to release its decision by Friday. While the agency’s final environmental study concluded the impacts would be “less than significant” after mitigation, environmental groups and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians have raised concerns about water‑way crossings, wildlife habitat, and insufficient tribal consultation, particularly regarding the pipeline’s crossing of the Pearl River.

The outcome will determine whether the Southeast gains additional gas capacity amid ongoing debates over the region’s energy mix and environmental stewardship.
