Kindred Companion Sciences develops CRISPR-edited hypoallergenic dogs

Kindred Companion Sciences, a biotechnology startup based in New York, has announced the development of the first genetically edited hypoallergenic dogs. Using CRISPR technology, researchers modified two beagles to prevent the production of a specific protein known to cause symptoms such as red eyes and wheezing in some humans.

While the breakthrough marks a shift from traditional selective breeding to genetic engineering, experts note that significant hurdles remain. It is currently unclear if a single genetic adjustment can reliably prevent allergic reactions in all humans, and the technology is not yet available to the public. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the long-term health consequences for the animals, as historical breeding practices have often led to increased inbreeding and disease susceptibility in domestic dogs.
