King Alexander I Karađorđević assassinated in Marseille

On October 9, 1934, King Alexander I Karađorđević, the ruler who unified the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes into Yugoslavia, was assassinated during an official visit to Marseille, France.

The assassination was carried out by a Bulgarian national, with Ustaše official Eugen Dido Kvaternik identified as an organizer. The event remains a significant political milestone of the interwar period.

Historical accounts from the King's family, including memoirs from Prince Tomislav Karađorđević, suggest that Alexander was already suffering from advanced cancer at the time of his death. According to family testimony, doctors had estimated he had approximately six months to live, and he reportedly weighed only about 50 kilograms during his final journey.
