King Charles attends Mey Highland Games in Scotland

King Charles III, aged 77, took part in the annual Mey Highland Games in Caithness, Scotland, on the first Saturday of August. Dressed in his customary kilt, the monarch acted as Chieftain of the games—a role he has held since 2002—and observed traditional competitions such as the tug‑of‑war, caber tossing, Highland dancing and pipe‑band performances. He congratulated the winning team of firefighters, spent time with the Wounded Highlanders veterans, and enjoyed a dram of whisky during the afternoon.

He was accompanied by Lady Sarah Chatto, daughter of the late Princess Margaret, who departed the event in the same vehicle as the King. The Mey Highland Games, founded in 1970 to mark the Queen Mother’s 70th birthday, typically draws around 2,000 spectators and is held at the John O’Groats showground. The royal visit marks the start of the monarch’s summer stay in Scotland, which later moves to Balmoral Castle.
