King Charles III £1 coin with minting error sells for over £120

A rare 2025 King Charles III £1 coin has sold for £122.08, more than 122 times its face value, due to a notable minting error. The error occurred during the production process when the die was not applied correctly, resulting in an oval center.

Because of this misalignment, the portrait of King Charles III extends into the gold-colored outer ring of the coin, creating the visual impression that the top of his head has been cut off. In standard versions of the coin, the entire portrait is contained within the silver-colored inner section.

The coin was sold via an online auction starting at £5. This follows previous instances of similar errors appearing on the collector market, including a similar 2025 coin that sold for £56.04.
