Norway prepares for state funeral of King Harald V

Norway is in official mourning following the death of King Harald V, who passed away on August 28, 2026, at the age of 89. His death has triggered an automatic succession, with King Haakon VIII ascending the throne and taking his constitutional oath. The Norwegian Royal House has declared a period of official mourning until October 9, 2026, during which official programs are suspended and staff must wear dark clothing or mourning uniforms.

The state funeral for King Harald V is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, at the Oslo Cathedral. The ceremony will include a nationwide minute of silence and a procession involving approximately 3,500 soldiers. International royals, including delegations from Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, and Spain, are expected to attend. Notably, the Spanish royal family will be represented by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and Queen Sofía, though King Juan Carlos I is not expected to attend.

Security measures for the funeral have led to the requisition of the Thon Hotel Opera in Oslo by authorities from September 6 to 10. Additionally, Marius Borg Høiby has been granted permission to attend the funeral under specific conditions and electronic monitoring, despite his ongoing legal proceedings.
