King Charles III opens Canada's Parliament and eyes a 2027 state visit to Spain

On 26 May 2024, King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in Ottawa on a Canadian Air Force CC‑330 aircraft. They were welcomed by Governor General Mary Simon and the prime minister, and Indigenous leaders from the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples took part in the ceremony. The monarchs took part in a traditional tree‑planting at Rideau Hall and the queen joined the Canadian Privy Council. The next day the king delivered the Speech from the Throne, formally opening the 45th Canadian parliamentary session.

A separate report notes that a state visit by the British monarchs to Spain is being discussed for the second half of 2027. The planned trip would reinforce UK‑Spain relations after Brexit and mirror the 2017 reciprocal visit by the Spanish king to the United Kingdom. Officials expect the visit to include a banquet at the Royal Palace of Madrid, possibly attended by Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, highlighting the long‑standing ties between the two royal houses.
