King Charles III to stay at Clarence House after Buckingham Palace refurbishment

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will continue to live at Clarence House even after the £369 million (US$487 million) ten‑year refurbishment of Buckingham Palace is completed next year. Senior royal official James Chalmers said the palace will remain the ceremonial and operational centre of the monarchy and that the decision will allow greater public access, with more events and tours for the roughly 700,000 annual visitors.

Royal biographer Hugo Vickers noted that Clarence House feels “like a home, not an office”, contrasting it with the “large Edwardian hotel” vibe of the palace. The move comes as the monarchy seeks to modernise its image after recent scrutiny, including the first public disclosure of the king’s personal taxes since becoming monarch.

The refurbishment will update plumbing, wiring and heating, extending the building’s lifespan for another 50 years, while the royal family plans to use the palace mainly for state banquets, garden parties and balcony appearances.
