King Charles III to visit Guyana and Caribbean amid reparations debate
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are scheduled to embark on a Caribbean tour from October 27 to November 4, 2026. The itinerary includes visits to the Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda, where the King will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
The tour arrives amidst intense debate regarding reparations for the transatlantic slave trade. While Buckingham Palace stated the visit aims to celebrate Commonwealth communities and cultures, the monarch faces calls to apologize for the United Kingdom’s historical role in slavery. A royal aide noted that while the King will not shy away from the “darkest days of our past,” official decisions regarding apologies and reparations remain the responsibility of the government.
In Guyana, the visit coincides with domestic political tension following an alleged assassination attempt on the Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed. Mohamed alleges that Senior Superintendent Prem Narine fired shots at his vehicle on October 12, 2026. While police accounts acknowledge the discharge of a firearm, the motive remains disputed, with Mohamed claiming a calculated attempt and Narine claiming he responded to a perceived gunshot.
