King Charles III warns of evolving automated cyber threats
King Charles III has issued a warning regarding the evolution of malicious online activity, noting that bad actors are increasingly using automated technologies to refine their tactics. In a letter to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) marking its 10th anniversary, the monarch emphasized that strong cybersecurity is essential to maintaining the international order and balancing the risks and opportunities presented by new technologies.
The King praised the NCSC, which was established in 2016 under the Government Communications Headquarters, for its role in defending democratic institutions and protecting critical infrastructure. He expressed gratitude for the agency's work, acknowledging that much of its defensive operations occur out of the public eye.
These warnings follow recent discussions regarding the risks of artificial intelligence. The King previously cautioned AI executives about the existential dangers of the technology if it were to fall into the wrong hands. Additionally, the NCSC recently provided assistance to the retailer Asos following a high-profile hack where cybercriminals used the company's app system to send unauthorized notifications to customers.
