King Charles to leave Buckingham Palace as primary residence after renovation

King Charles and Queen Camilla have announced that they will not move back into Buckingham Palace once its major renovation is completed. The refurbishment, started in 2017 and costing about $487 million, will upgrade essential infrastructure such as electrical, plumbing and heating systems and is scheduled for completion in 2027.

The Sovereign Grant report, which details the financing of royal duties and properties, clarified that the palace will continue to serve as a venue for official ceremonies and royal work, but will no longer be the couple’s main home. Charles and Camilla will remain based at Clarence House in London, following a different arrangement from the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The same report revealed that King Charles has paid more than $39 million in taxes since ascending the throne in 2022, part of the monarchy’s push for greater financial transparency.
