King Charles to Remain at St James's Palace; Buckingham Palace to Stay Ceremonial

King Charles and Queen Camilla will no longer make Buckingham Palace their private residence after the extensive multi‑year renovations are completed. The royal couple will continue to live at St James’s Palace, a property they have traditionally preferred.

Buckingham Palace will retain its role as the ceremonial heart of the British monarchy, hosting state occasions, official receptions and remaining open to the public. A palace spokesperson said the king "has a great love for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect for its role". The announcement coincides with the royal household’s push for greater transparency on public spending; last year the king paid over £30 million in taxes and the annual public funding for the monarchy is expected to drop below £100 million once the refurbishments finish.
