King Charles visits York's new Macmillan Cancer Centre

King Charles toured the newly redeveloped Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre at York Hospital ahead of its official opening. He met patients, including Lou Rhodes, a 49‑year‑old with stage‑4 secondary breast cancer who helped design the facility. Rhodes described the encounter as an "instant bond" and praised the King’s understanding of cancer patients’ experience. The £2.4 million refurbishment is expected to support thousands of cancer patients in the region each year, and the monarch planted a Macmillan rose in the centre’s garden with care lead Colm Gough.

During the same visit, Charles also inspected a red‑squirrel conservation project at the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s York Biotech Campus, where scientists explained a programme to deliver oral contraceptives to invasive grey squirrels to protect the endangered red squirrel.
