King County imposes Stage 2 outdoor fire ban
King County Fire Marshal Eric Urban announced a Stage 2 burn ban for all unincorporated areas of the county, taking effect at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026. The order prohibits all outdoor fires, including backyard fire pits, campfires, cooking fires and any burning of yard debris or brush. Violations can be charged as misdemeanors.
Allowed devices are limited to portable grills and patio heaters that follow manufacturer instructions, such as charcoal grills, propane fire tables and self‑contained wood‑pellet grills placed on non‑combustible surfaces. Residents are urged to dispose of charcoal remains carefully and to exercise extreme caution when smoking.
The ban responds to several weeks of elevated temperatures and dry conditions that have heightened wildfire risk across the region, compounded by recent fires in Eastern Washington and stretched firefighting resources. “King County continues to be inundated by high temperatures and dry conditions—forecasted weather does not appear to provide relief for the foreseeable future,” Urban said. The fire marshal asked the public to help keep neighborhoods, forests and first‑responders safe by complying with the restrictions.
