King County opens new recycling and transfer station in Algona

King County has opened the South County Recycling and Transfer Station in Algona, a new 84,000-square-foot facility designed to expand recycling and hazardous waste disposal services. The station serves residents and businesses in Algona, Auburn, and Federal Way, offering recycling for materials such as appliances, glass, metal, plastic, wood, cardboard, paper, and yard waste.

County Executive Girmay Zahilay led the opening, noting that the energy-efficient facility aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the natural environment. The modern design includes features to mitigate odors, noise, and traffic, such as enclosed structures, dust-suppressing misters, sound barrier walls, and additional driving lanes. The facility also provides permanent hazardous waste disposal services, supplementing existing mobile services in the region.
