King County oversight office recommends policy changes for ICE response

The Office of Law Enforcement Oversight (OLEO) has issued a report containing seven community-driven recommendations for the King County Sheriff’s Office regarding its response to increased federal immigration enforcement. The report, titled ‘Responding to Increased Federal Immigration Enforcement,’ was developed in collaboration with several community organizations, including the Congolese Integration Network and The Arc of King County.

According to the report, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests at community locations such as schools and workplaces have risen significantly. Community members expressed concerns regarding fear, confusion, and a reduction in trust toward local law enforcement. Survey data indicated that a significant portion of respondents felt immigration enforcement has impacted school attendance and access to healthcare.

The recommendations aim to strengthen current policies to be more responsive to community needs, expand outreach and education, and clarify existing policy language to reduce uncertainty regarding the Sheriff’s Office’s role in relation to federal enforcement activities.
