King Felipe VI undergoes successful cataract surgery
King Felipe VI of Spain underwent a routine surgical procedure to treat cataracts in his left eye on Saturday night. The operation took place at the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega in Oviedo, lasting approximately 30 minutes without complications.
The procedure followed a three-day official visit to Asturias with Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía. The monarch spent the night at the clinic for observation and was discharged on Sunday morning, appearing in good spirits.
In addition to treating the cataract, surgeons also partially corrected issues with myopia and astigmatism. While medical specialists recommended wearing sunglasses and using eye drops during recovery, the King has already resumed his institutional duties, including presiding over the opening of the academic year for the Royal Academies in Madrid.
