Norway's King Haakon VIII opens Parliament for the first time as monarch

King Haakon VIII of Norway officially opened the 171st session of the Storting on October 2, marking his first parliamentary opening as monarch following the death of King Harald V in August. In his throne speech, the King addressed national security, emphasizing the need for stability and cooperation with key allies including the UK, France, Germany, Poland, and Canada.

Queen Mette-Marit was unable to attend the historic ceremony due to a respiratory infection. The Queen is currently in a long-term rehabilitation phase following a lung transplant in June to treat chronic pulmonary fibrosis. Her absence was noted as a significant setback for her public schedule, though medical professionals report satisfaction with her ongoing recovery progress.

In her place, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra accompanied the King, marking a prominent appearance in her role as heir to the throne. The event took place amidst a period of transition for the Norwegian monarchy and was accompanied by local demonstrations regarding fuel prices in Oslo.
