King Harald V of Norway hospitalized due to blood disorder

King Harald V of Norway, aged 89, has been hospitalized at Rikshospitalet in Oslo following a medical examination. The Norwegian Royal House announced that the monarch is on sick leave for two weeks due to complications from hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder.

Recent cortisone treatment for the condition reportedly caused fluid accumulation in his body, necessitating inpatient care. During this period, Crown Prince Haakon will serve as regent, assuming the King's official duties.

The King's health issues follow a series of recent medical challenges within the royal family. Queen Sonja was hospitalized in May for heart issues, Princess Astrid suffers from heart problems, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit recently underwent a lung transplant following a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Harald V has faced several health setbacks in 2024 and 2026, including a pacemaker implantation and previous hospitalizations for infections.
