King Harald V of Norway hospitalized as health condition worsens FAST-MOVING

The Norwegian Royal Palace announced that the health of King Harald V, 89, has worsened over the weekend. The monarch, who is the oldest reigning sovereign in Europe, has been hospitalized at Oslo's National Hospital since last Monday due to complications from hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder that causes the rapid destruction of red blood cells.

In addition to the anemia, the King is currently being treated with antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his blood. While the Palace stated that his condition is stable and that he has responded well to the antibiotic treatment, he remains on sick leave until further notice. His hospitalization was initially prompted by fluid accumulation in his body, a side effect of cortisone treatment used to manage his anemia.

During the King's absence, Crown Prince Haakon is serving as Regent, assuming the monarch's institutional and state responsibilities. Members of the royal family, including the Crown Prince and Queen Sonja, have been visiting the King in the hospital. The King has previously faced several health challenges, including a critical illness in Malaysia in 2024, but has consistently maintained his intention to serve for life.
