King Harald V of Norway, 89, is currently hospitalized at Oslo University Hospital following a deterioration in his health. The monarch was admitted on August 17 to treat fluid retention caused by cortisone therapy for haemolytic anaemia, a condition where red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced. His condition worsened over the weekend due to a bacterial blood infection, for which he is receiving antibiotic treatment. The Royal Palace reports that his condition is currently stable and he is responding to the medication.

Crown Prince Haakon, 53, is currently serving as regent while the King remains on medical leave until further notice. The royal household is facing a period of significant challenge, as Crown Princess Mette-Marit is also recovering from a lung transplant performed in June. Additionally, the family has dealt with legal issues involving Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, who was recently sentenced to prison.

Queen Sonja has canceled several official engagements to remain by the King's side. Family members, including Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, have also visited the hospital to support the monarch.
