King Harald V of Norway remembered for lifelong romance with Queen Sonja

The romantic history of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway has gained renewed attention following the King's passing on August 28, just one day before their 58th wedding anniversary. The couple had been married for 57 years.

Their relationship faced significant challenges due to the Norwegian Constitution at the time, which did not yet recognize equal succession rights. This led to a nine-year period of secrecy and public pressure, as Harald famously risked his position on the throne to marry Sonja Haraldsen, the daughter of a merchant. Their meeting in 1959 in Oslo sparked a lifelong partnership that has since become a symbol of enduring love. The story is set to be dramatized in a Nordic miniseries titled ‘The Commoner’, scheduled for release on Prime Video in 2025.
