King Harald V planned secret 90th birthday celebrations

Following the death of King Harald V on August 28, 2026, details have emerged regarding a previously secret plan to celebrate the 90th birthdays of both King Harald and Queen Sonja in February 2027.

According to a “Save the Date” invitation obtained by the newspaper Dagbladet, the Norwegian Royal Palace had planned a multi-day program in Oslo from February 19 to 21. The event was intended to host Nordic heads of state, European royals, and official Norwegian representatives, culminating in a gala dinner at the Royal Palace on February 20.

While King Harald would have turned 90 the following day, Queen Sonja’s 90th birthday falls later in the year on July 4. The Royal Palace has stated that it is “not appropriate to go into more detail about the plans” following the King's death, and it remains uncertain whether the celebrations will proceed or be modified for the Queen alone.
