Norway's Queen Sonja Hospitalized with Heart Issues

Queen Sonja, 88, was admitted to Oslo's Rikshospitalet after developing atrial fibrillation and heart failure. The royal household said she would remain in the hospital for examinations and observation and was placed on a one‑week sick leave.

Because of the queen’s illness, she was unable to join King Harald on his scheduled four‑municipality tour of Vestland. The king proceeded alone, visiting Etne and continuing to Samnanger, Vaksdal and Askvoll. He told crowds, “Both the queen and I had looked forward to coming to Etne, but unfortunately she had to stay home,” and conveyed the queen’s wishes for a speedy recovery.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre publicly wished the queen “good health and a quick recovery,” noting that she is receiving proper care. The monarchy’s program otherwise continues as planned, with the king expected to complete the remaining regional visits after the queen’s convalescence.
