King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV burial faces travel restrictions

Preparations are underway for the burial of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV of Tooro, who passed away at age 31 after a battle with a rare form of brain cancer. The King is scheduled to be laid to rest on September 12 at the Karambi Royal Tombs.

The Ugandan Ministry of Health has issued an advisory barring mourners from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from attending the ceremony. This restriction is due to an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC. While Uganda was recently declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organization, health officials remain under active surveillance to prevent new cases. To accommodate those unable to travel, the government intends to provide a virtual link for subjects of the late King to follow the proceedings.

Public attention has also focused on the King's funeral procession, which utilized a specialized luxury hearse hired from Kenya. The vehicle features a mechanism that allows a viewing section to open for mourners during specific stages of the journey while remaining closed in dusty areas. The use of the Kenyan vehicle has prompted discussions regarding the availability of specialized funeral equipment within Uganda for high-profile royal ceremonies.
