Tooro King Oyo dies at age 34 in the United States

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the monarch of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, has died at the age of 34. He passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in the United States after battling an aggressive form of cancer.

Recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch when he ascended the throne at age three in 1995, King Oyo was a prominent cultural figure. While the Ugandan constitution limits traditional monarchs to cultural and social roles without political power, he was widely respected for his advocacy in youth empowerment, environmental conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness.

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered three days of national mourning and an official burial. The Tooro Kingdom has begun traditional preparations, with the Babiito royal clan coordinating cultural rites. The King’s body is expected to be transported to Karuziika Palace in Kabarole for a nine-day mourning period. Discussions regarding his successor will be conducted according to Tooro tradition at a later date.
