King Sunny Ade celebrates 80th birthday with tributes from Nigerian leaders

Legendary Juju musician Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, widely known as King Sunny Ade, is celebrating his 80th birthday. The milestone has drawn widespread tributes from Nigerian political leaders and cultural observers.

President Bola Tinubu praised the musician as a “cultural ambassador” who transformed Juju music into a globally recognized Nigerian treasure. Tinubu highlighted Adegeye’s ability to project Nigeria’s rich heritage to international audiences through his innovative blend of traditional instruments, such as the talking drum, with modern elements like the pedal-steel guitar.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa also issued statements honoring the musician. Sanwo-Olu described him as an elder statesman and a community leader, while Aiyedatiwa celebrated him as a distinguished son of the Ondo Kingdom who has promoted the state’s traditions worldwide.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, King Sunny Ade has been a pivotal figure in modernizing Juju music. His work has earned him international acclaim, including Grammy nominations, and has influenced generations of African musicians by integrating complex polyrhythms and diverse instrumentation into the genre.
