Nigerian education unions launch strikes and protests over agreements and concessions

Academic and labor unrest is impacting several educational institutions across Nigeria. In Lagos State, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH). The union is demanding that the state government implement the December 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement, specifically regarding the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and welfare provisions for staff.

Simultaneously, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has suspended a planned industrial action aimed at Federal Unity Colleges following a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. The suspension is intended to allow a newly formed committee to review concerns regarding the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos, to its alumni association. However, some unions, including the Joint Workers Council of the Federal Ministry of Education, have rejected this suspension, demanding a full reversal of the concession. This dispute has led to the closure of several Federal Unity Colleges in states such as Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Rivers.

In contrast, lecturers at Plateau State University have suspended their strike after reaching an agreement with the state government to address six key demands, including pension schemes and unpaid arrears.
