King’s College Lagos faces debate over PPP amid 117th anniversary

King’s College Lagos is marking its 117th anniversary amid a growing debate over a proposed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Federal Government and the school. While the institution is celebrated for its history of academic excellence and its role in training Nigerian leaders, it currently faces significant challenges due to deteriorating infrastructure and inadequate investment.

The proposed PPP arrangement has sparked controversy and opposition from education unions. Workers' unions have expressed concerns regarding the implications for staff and the potential precedent the move could set for other unity colleges. In response to claims of privatization, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, stated that the Federal Government has no intention of selling any Federal Unity Colleges and that the government retains full ownership and responsibility.

The King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA) has appealed for public understanding. KCOBA President Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam announced that a separate briefing would be held to provide detailed explanations regarding the concession, led by the association’s Board of Trustees chairman, Alhaji Femi Okunnu.
