King’s College London study reveals individuality in molecular aging
A long-term study published in Science has revealed that human aging is a highly individualized process, particularly at the molecular level. An international research team led by King’s College London tracked 335 healthy women in the United Kingdom over an eight-year period.
By analyzing blood samples, researchers measured changes in 16,000 genes and hundreds of metabolites. The study found that while certain trends exist—such as a decrease in the expression of the tumor-suppressor gene p53—the overall aging journey is unique to each person. The findings also indicated that the immune system undergoes a remodeling process rather than a simple, steady decline.
Notably, the study observed a decline in levels of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) within the cohort. Researchers noted this trend is consistent with the impact of regulations limiting the use of these chemicals in the United Kingdom.
