Kính Thiên Palace restoration project begins in Hanoi
On September 29, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Thăng Long Imperial Citadel in Hanoi to launch the project for the preservation, renovation, and restoration of Kính Thiên Palace. The event was attended by General Secretary and President Tô Lâm, along with various high-ranking officials and representatives from UNESCO and ICOMOS.
Kính Thiên Palace, originally constructed in 1428 during the Lê dynasty, served as the central ceremonial hall and a symbol of national power for the Đại Việt state. The restoration project is the culmination of over 15 years of interdisciplinary research involving history, archaeology, and architecture. Recent excavations in 2025 and 2026 have provided critical scientific data, revealing a cultural layer approximately 6 meters thick that spans from the Đại La period to the Nguyễn dynasty.
Sun Group has been selected as the construction unit for this high-priority project. The restoration aims to recover the central axis of the Imperial Citadel, following UNESCO guidelines to ensure authenticity and integrity. The project is part of Hanoi's broader vision to connect historical values with contemporary life and is expected to be completed by 2029.
