Kinmen’s Luofan Fortune Cake wins gold at Japan design competition
The ‘Luofan Fortune Cake’ from the Dongkeng Community in Kinmen has won a gold medal in the food category of the 2026 Japan International Tourism Product Design Competition held in Tokyo. The competition, organized by the Japan International Exchange Association, featured souvenir brands from over ten countries and regions, including Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, the United States, and South Korea.
The product is deeply rooted in Kinmen’s ‘Luofan culture,’ which commemorates the historical migration of Kinmen residents to Southeast Asia to seek livelihoods. Local youth Xie Donglin spent eight months refining the recipe to balance traditional flavors with modern consumer preferences.
This award marks the first international gold medal for the Dongkeng Community, serving as a significant milestone for local revitalization efforts by transforming historical immigrant memories into a globally recognized cultural product.
