Kino Aski LNG project faces scrutiny over Atikamekw Nation partnership

The Kino Aski LNG project, which proposes an export terminal between Baie-Comeau and Europe, has drawn scrutiny following the announcement of a partnership between the Atikamekw Nation and the Norwegian firm Marinvest Energy.

Greenpeace Canada has raised questions regarding the transparency of the partnership and the extent of the Atikamekw Nation's involvement. Specifically, Louis Couillard, Greenpeace Canada's Climate-Energy campaign manager, noted uncertainty regarding whether the proposed pipeline routes would actually traverse Atikamekw territory.

In response, the Atikamekw Nation confirmed that Marinvest Energy serves as a minority partner providing international energy expertise. The Kino Aski LNG official site states the project is based on the principle that economic development should be achieved “with and by First Nations,” aiming for a governance structure that allows for indigenous community participation.
