Kinosaki International Art Center promotes regional revitalization in Japan
The Kinosaki International Art Center (KIAC) in Toyooka City, Japan, serves as an artist-in-residence facility designed to revitalize the local region through culture and the arts. Located in the historic Kinosaki Onsen area, the center provides artists with studios, a theater, and accommodations to focus on creating new works while engaging with the local community.
Originally a meeting hall, the space was acquired by Toyooka City in 2014 to combat population decline and a lack of cultural infrastructure. Since its establishment, the center has helped foster the Toyooka Theater Festival and supported the development of local arts universities. Program Director Yuichiro Yoshida noted that the center encourages artists to interact with residents through workshops and projects that explore local history and environment, such as preserving the area's traditional geisha culture.
