Quilombola communities seek reparations from Kinross Gold in Minas Gerais

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) is negotiating socio-environmental and territorial reparations for quilombola communities in Paracatu, Minas Gerais, following their displacement two decades ago. The negotiations involve the Canadian multinational Kinross Gold Corporation, which operates the Morro do Ouro gold and silver mine.

Approximately 1,300 families from the Machadinho, Amaros, and São Domingos communities are expected to benefit from the potential agreement. The proposed reparations aim to secure official recognition of the communities, guarantee territorial rights, and establish criteria for financial compensation and resettlement. Legal representatives estimate the required indemnities could range between R$ 500 million and R$ 1.2 billion.

Regional Prosecutor José Adércio Leite Sampaio has been actively mediating the process, meeting with residents and visiting mining facilities to facilitate a solution that restores dignity to the populations whose traditional ways of life were fragmented by industrial expansion and tailings dams.
