Kinshasa implements new traffic plans amid roadwork disruptions

Urban transportation and traffic management are undergoing significant changes in Kinshasa and surrounding areas. In the Caribus project, phase 2 North on the RN1 between Carrefour Méga and Carrefour Nel has caused major disruptions. Local taxi drivers report that travel times have doubled, reducing their daily trips from seven to as few as three or four. The construction work, managed by CADEMA, has led to heavy congestion, particularly near the court and Kinga center, impacting both driver income and physical well-being.

Simultaneously, a new one-way traffic plan has been implemented in Kinshasa's Zone A, effective September 21. Announced by Provincial Transport Minister Jésus-Noël Sheke, the plan affects major routes including the Kintambo Magasin-Gare centrale axis, Boulevard du 30 Juin, and Avenue de la Libération. Specifically, parts of Avenue Mondjiba are now one-way to improve traffic flow. While initial reports suggest relatively fluid movement, challenges remain regarding vehicles parking near schools and the need for permanent concrete separators to replace temporary metal barriers.
