Kinshasa infrastructure projects to modernize Mitendi, Matadi-Kibala, and UPN markets

Kinshasa’s provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Public Works, Land Affairs, Urbanism, and Habitat, Alain Tshilungu, has provided updates on the modernization of several key markets in the capital.

In the Mont-Ngafula commune, the Mitendi market site is slated to become a dry port logistics infrastructure. This project aims to manage heavy goods vehicles arriving from the ports of Matadi and Boma, thereby reducing traffic congestion within Kinshasa. The designated four-hectare site belongs to the Radio-Télévision Nationale Congolaise (RTNC). To support local traders during this transition, the city has funded a temporary market featuring 1,000 stalls located near the original site.

The Matadi-Kibala market modernization is currently in a preparatory phase, managed by the Agence de Gestion des Projets (AGEP). While four hectares are required for the project, only 1.2 hectares have been recovered so far. To fund the necessary studies and construction, AGEP has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Burundian company EIS-EKA SARL as part of a public-private partnership with the city.
