Kinshasa's Palais de la Nation proposed as museum of Congolese memory

On June 30, 2026, the Democratic Republic of Congo marked the 66th anniversary of its independence. A commentary argued that the Palais de la Nation, the former governor‑general’s residence and the site where Patrice Lumumba delivered his historic independence speech, should be repurposed as a museum dedicated to Congolese memory rather than remain the seat of executive power.

At the same time, artist Rodrigo Gukwikila opened the "Rayon Z" exhibition at the JRK Garden in Kinshasa, running until July 15. The show, timed to the independence anniversary, uses large canvases and black‑paper works to explore themes of freedom, present‑day responsibility, and human unity, with curators emphasizing the symbolic importance of the date for the nation’s ongoing self‑determination.
