Kioxia launches NX1 liquid‑cooled PCIe 5 SSD for AI data centers
Kioxia announced the NX1 Series solid‑state drive, the first SSD to support direct liquid cooling for GPU‑heavy AI servers and hyperscale data centers. The drive uses a PCIe Gen 5.0 interface with NVMe 2.0, comes in the E1.S form factor, and is offered in a 9.5 mm version that can be mounted on a cold‑plate liquid‑cooling system and a 15 mm air‑cooled version. Capacities range from 1.92 TB to 15.36 TB and the NAND is built from 218‑layer BiCS gen‑8 TLC flash with a Kioxia‑developed controller. Kioxia claims the NX1 delivers up to 38 % higher sequential write speed and up to 20 % higher random write speed than its predecessor, the XD series, and includes an optional self‑encrypting drive compliant with TCG Opal. The product meets Open Compute Project Datacenter NVMe SSD v2.6 specifications and supports NVMe Flexible Data Placement. Sampling will be done with selected hyperscale customers, and the drives will be demonstrated at the Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) event in Santa Clara, California, from 4 to 6 August 2026.
