Franz Xaver Kroetz and ‘Kir Royal’ mark 40 years of cult television

The German television series ‘Kir Royal’ marks its 40th anniversary. Created by Helmut Dietl, the satirical series first aired on September 22, 1986, and became a cult classic by documenting the high society and ‘Schickeria’ lifestyle of Munich during the 1980s.

The series features Franz Xaver Kroetz in his most famous television role as the gossip reporter Baby Schimmerlos. Kroetz, a prolific dramatist who has written nearly 70 plays, achieved unexpected television stardom through this role despite his primary focus being theater and social criticism.

Other notable cast members include Senta Berger and Dieter Hildebrandt. The show remains available via the ARD Mediathek, continuing its legacy as a sharp critique of the wealthy and influential circles of Munich.
