Kiran Thapa Magar to be sworn in as Bagmati Province Chief Minister

Kiran Thapa Magar, a CPN-UML provincial assembly member, is set to be appointed as the Chief Minister of Bagmati Province. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Thursday afternoon following a claim for the post supported by the UML, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP), and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).

The appointment has triggered significant internal conflict within the RPP. While the RPP parliamentary party leader submitted a letter of support for Thapa Magar, the party’s central leadership has formally rejected the validity of that claim. The RPP Central Executive Committee had previously decided against participating in any provincial government, and leadership has warned of disciplinary action against members acting against this directive.

Legal and political debates have emerged regarding whether the support from the RPP's 12 provincial assembly members is legitimate. The RPP leadership has urged the Province Chief not to recognize the support letter, citing that it was submitted without official party instruction and without a formal parliamentary party meeting. Despite these objections, the Province Chief is proceeding with the appointment to resolve the government formation.
