Kirin and Mizuho lead adoption of Japan's SSBJ sustainability standards

Kirin Holdings and Mizuho Financial Group are among the first major Japanese companies to adopt the Sustainability Standards Board of Japan (SSBJ) disclosure standards. This move comes ahead of the mandatory application of SSBJ standards for companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, which is expected to begin with securities reports for the fiscal year ending March 2027.

As sustainability reporting shifts from voluntary to statutory disclosure, the importance and weight of the information provided will increase significantly. Companies face several challenges, including expanding the scope of information collection to consolidated entities, ensuring reliability for third-party assurance, and demonstrating the connection between sustainability efforts and financial performance.

Kirin Holdings has been recognized for its approach to making disclosures more communicative by using a storytelling format to engage investors. Meanwhile, Mizuho Financial Group is utilizing early disclosure to refine its communication through investor dialogue. Other companies, such as NEC and ENEOS, are also exploring various methods, including AI utilization and industry-specific standard reviews, to prepare for these regulatory changes.
