Kirinyaga County Road Crash Kills Eight on Mwea–Embu Highway

On August 1, a lorry travelling from Mwea toward Embu swerved to avoid potholes on the Mwea–Embu Road in the Murubara area of Kirinyaga County, Kenya. The vehicle entered the opposite lane and collided head‑on with a Piaggio tuk‑tuk. The crash killed at least eight people – a 29‑year‑old lorry passenger, four women passengers in the tuk‑tuk and three pedestrians walking on the road shoulder – and injured a 27‑year‑old female passenger, who was taken to Kimbimbi Level IV Hospital. Police arrested the lorry driver and moved the bodies to the Kerugoya Level V Hospital mortuary for identification. Victims had been traveling to a rice‑farming job in the Mwea irrigation scheme. The incident follows a series of recent multi‑vehicle crashes in Kenya, prompting renewed safety warnings from the National Transport and Safety Authority and police urging motorists to maintain road‑worthy vehicles and observe traffic rules.
