Kit Fitzgerald, pioneering video artist, dies at 73

Visionary video artist Kit Fitzgerald has died at the age of 73 following a battle with a rare and aggressive cancer. Her death was announced by her husband and creative partner, Peter Gordon.

Fitzgerald was a pioneer in the field of video art, known for blending traditional painting techniques—such as vivid color and dynamic light—with emerging electronic technologies. She described her approach as “technology with a humanness,” creating works that served as spectral stages for prominent composers, poets, and choreographers.

Throughout her career, she collaborated on landmark performances and productions globally, including work with Ryuichi Sakamoto in Tokyo, the Sydney Festival, and live shows with Max Roach in New York City. She was also among the first artists to receive commissions from major broadcasters such as the BBC and PBS. Her recent work included projections for ‘The Mother of Us All,’ a collaboration involving the Juilliard School and the New York Philharmonic.
