Kitale political clash injures two police officers
Two National Police Service officers were injured and two government vehicles were damaged during a political clash in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, on Friday, October 16, 2026. The incident occurred amidst heightened political tensions in the region, following President William Ruto’s development tour and a public dispute between the President and Governor George Natembeya.
The unrest was linked to the burial of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police Lazarus Simiyu Opicho in Sirende, Kiminini. Tensions escalated when political leaders were denied opportunities to address mourners, leading to speeches that expressed support for or criticism of President Ruto. Security officials eventually intervened to control the proceedings.
The National Police Service has launched an investigation into the incident, stating that preliminary findings indicate breaches of the Public Order Act, Cap 56. The NPS condemned the conduct of the politicians involved, noting that such actions undermine the rule of law and endanger public safety. Authorities have warned that political affiliation will not shield anyone found to have broken the law.
